A rare and interesting Ilkhanid fals
Lot 1954
ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad Khudabanda Öljeytü, AH 703-716 / AD 1304-1316. Fals (Bronze, 20 mm, 1.36 g, 1 h), probably Sultaniya, AH 715 = AD 1315/6. Yigit Altay Collection YA-4. Zeno-164103. Zeno-164084. Rare. The flan slightly wavy along one edge, otherwise, very fine.

This type was misidentified as an Eretnid issue dating to AH 756 by Haluk Perk and Husnu Ozturk (H. Perk and H. Ozturk: Eretnid, Burhanid and Amirate of Arzincan Coins. Istanbul 2008, p. 343, 264). However, the nisba-form of al-Sultani on the reverse of this interesting type may indicate Sultaniya as the mint of the issue, while the correct date is AH 715, as evident on other examples. We kindly thank Y. Altay for his valuable contributions to the discussion of this issue
